An 81-year-old has triumphed in a golf competition.

Malcolm Glass won Division 2 of the first round of this year's Seniors Winter League.

His victory came shortly after a challenging round at the Saunton Sands Links Golf Course in North Devon.

Representing Axe Cliff with Dave Bruce, Glass participated in the Devon Vets Past Captains Golf Society's last competition of the year.

Although he did not win at Saunton, he proved his prowess at home, clinching victory with 33 points.

Glass was closely followed by 85-year-old Gilbert Cox, who, despite his two new hips, scored a commendable 32 points.

David White secured third place with 31 points.

Meanwhile, Tom Spencer excelled in Division 1, scoring a par round of 36 points, narrowly beating Dave Morgan, who came second with 35 points.

Dave Morgan's score was only good enough for second place on countback from vice-captain Mike Chadwick.

In another development, the ladies' section of the golf club recently organised a taster session for prospective golfers.

Participants enjoyed a tour of the course and were treated to picturesque views along the Jurassic Coast and the wetlands along the River Axe and its valley.

The golfers played to the greens, while the non-golfers took over putting on the greens.

Following the games, everyone gathered at the clubhouse for refreshments and discussions about the sport.

Several attendees expressed interest in learning to play, marking the event a success.

The men's section of the club recently bagged the East Devon Trophy, despite the downpour on Saturday.

The annual competition pits the four clubs of Axe Cliff, Honiton, Sidmouth, and East Devon against each other.

Each team made up of ten players, has its best six individual Stableford scores counted.

Axe Cliff clinched victory with a total of 202 points, averaging 33.7 per player, defeating Honiton's 194 points.

This win was particularly sweet for the Axe Cliff team, as they had not won the trophy since 2019.
