Three points took Sidmouth to the top of Peninsula League East where they have a single point lead over Cullompton Rangers and have played two fewer games.

Sidmouth’s latest success came against Crediton United where goals from Louis Jagger Cane, Craig Veal and Louis Spalding set up a 3-1 victory.

The Vikings were on the front foot from the start and took the lead after only five minutes when Jack Miller freed Jagger Cane up the left and he clinically netted his twelfth goal of the season in all competitions,

Crediton then survived an onslaught on their goal but a combination of poor finishing, good goalkeeping and resolute defending kept the score to 1-0 at the break.

Sidmouth resumed the second period where they left off and it was no surprise when they increased the lead, a teasing cross from Jagger Cane picking out Veal who volleyed home from close in.

Veal, who later picked up the Man of the Match Award, almost had a second soon afterwards when his curling shot came back off the crossbar only for Spalding to react quickest and score with a close-range header.

The visitors got more into the game as Sidmouth made changes in personnel and they were rewarded with a late consolation from Callum Woodman.

Honiton Town were involved in another tight battle in windy conditions at Elburton Villa where they eventually went down by the odd goal in five.

It was not a good start for the Hippos who conceded two goals inside the first twenty minutes of the game.

First Sam Hughes lifted the ball over the head of the goalkeeper to open the scoring and then Callum Merrin found space in the box to fire home.

Honiton looked a different outfit after the break and following a period of pressure, they reduced the arrears when Aaron Pearse headed home a Kyle Howell cross.

On seventy-five minutes they were level. Pearse was hauled down in the box and soon recovered to net from the penalty spot.

When it looked as though a point had been earned, Elburton’s Hughes went down in the box, although there appeared to be no contact, and, from the disputed penalty that was awarded, Merrin made it 3-2.

After getting their first point on the board in a midweek draw at Honiton, Axminster Town were well beaten 6-2 at home by a strong Newton Abbot Spurs side.

Spurs, playing with two wide men and a lively central striker, always caused the Tigers defence problems and they soon moved into a two-goal advantage.

Axminster narrowed the gap with an effort from Reece McCabe but a slow start at beginning of the second half allowed Spurs to increase their lead and the visitors went on to add further goals before the end.

The home side’s second goal came from a Matt Reed penalty and the Man of the Match Award went to Bailey Galloway.

The Newton Abbot Spurs goals were scored by Tate Breslan (2), Owen Green (2), Stuart Morgan and Brad Crocombe.

On Saturday (October 12th) all three sides are involved in Peninsula League Cup matches. Axminster entertain Newquay while Honiton travel to Dobwalls and Sidmouth are away to Elburton Villa.
