It was a busy week for the local sides in the Peninsula League East this weekend with all three teams in action.

There was another comfortable win for Sidmouth Town as they beat Okehampton Argyle 3-0, a side also in contention at the top of the table.

The three points have taken Sidmouth Town up to second place in Peninsula League East.

Sidmouth backed up their 6-0 success against Axminster in midweek by taking another crucial three points with goals from Liam Carey, Jamie Vaughan Ryall and Ryan Gilpin.

Both goalkeepers made good saves in an even first half, but Sidmouth gradually took control and went into a deserved lead when Vaughan Ryall was brought down in the box and Carey netted from the spot.

Okehampton started the second half with a player in the sin bin and it 2-0 to Sidmouth after 60 minutes when Vaughan Ryall finished from close range following a long free kick from goalkeeper Elliot Driver.

There were further problems for the visitors soon afterwards when they had a player red-carded for a handling offence and another player sin binned for disputing the decision.

Gilpin put the icing on the cake with a third goal and Jack Miller picked up the Vikings’ Man of the Match Award.

Axminister gave a much-improved showing against Peninsula League East leaders Cullompton Rangers who scored double figures against them at the beginning of the season but were still subject to a 3-0 loss.

The Tigers were also missing a number of key squad members including Sam and Owen Dibling who were away watching Tyler, their son and brother respectively, make his first Premier League start for Southampton against Manchester United.

Cullompton could find no way through in the first half, but they hit two quick goals soon after the break and completed the win with a third near the end.

Tigers’ boss Mark Scott knows there is still rebuilding to do but added: “We are becoming a much sterner team to play against now.”

Finally, Honiton Town took on Elburton Villa.

In a physical encounter at Mountbatten Park, it was the visitors who took the points with a second half comeback in this Peninsula League East game that ended 2-1 to Elburton.

Honiton led 1-0 at the break with a strike from Chris Long but Elburton levelled minutes into the second period with an effort from Adam Macpherson and then struck a late winner through Lewis Russell.

The home side had two players taken to hospital during the game for treatment to damaged noses.

Honiton’s Man of the Match Award went to Tom Rush.

All three local Peninsula League East clubs are involved in The Isuzu FA Vase Second Qualifying Round matches on Saturday (September 21st).

Axminster travel to Elburton, Sidmouth are at Wellington and Honiton entertain Torpoint Athletic.
