John Purdy has been declared winner of the Lorton Cup at Axe Cliff Golf Club with his excellent scores over the Winter Ecelectic competition, writes Dave Bruce.
On Wednesday, the Ladies were trying to play their monthly Medal but only three brave souls finished the full 18, namely Paula Heasman, Karin Cox and Sally Fright. The sensible ones retreated from the high winds to the comfort of our lovely wood burner in the clubhouse.
The week culminated in the annual Captains' Drive in on Saturday with an excellent turnout to celebrate the new Captains, who are Stella Thompson for the Ladies, Richard Gibbons for the Seniors and Kelly Peters for the Men’s Section.
The trio started proceedings with all good drives off the first tee before everyone else scattered to their respective tees. Being a gentleman, I will comment on Stella first because she told me to do so!
Now retired from her former job as a palliative care nurse visiting many people in their homes at the end of their lives and Seaton was her favourite place to work, this is Stella’s second season as captain.
Richard has been in business in Seaton all his life and a member of our Club for some 40 years. Now retired, he enjoys juggling golf with looking after his grandchildren.
Kelly has only been a member for four years. His wife has a salon in Seaton and was kindly gifted a round of golf, so Kelly thought he would join the club and has not looked back since. He is a very good self employed carpenter and they live in Seaton where their lovely twin daughters go to Seaton Primary School and must be their dad's keenest golf fans.
The winning team on the day comprised Andrew Thompson, Luke Snell and young Amy Rodriquez, who alone scored 34 pts on just 11 holes to help her team amass 50 points - fantastic Amy.
The day raised £650 for Captain’s chosen charities of Prostate Cancer UK, Seaton Hospice at home and The Golf Foundation.
It was a wonderful day to celebrate our wonderful club.
