This weekend is the start of this year’s Devon County Swimming Championships.
Taking place across three of the next four weekends, the event at the Life Centre in Plymouth sees the County's best swimmers battle it out for medals in all age groups, from 10 year-olds to 17 and overs.
Following an excellent finish to 2023, Honiton Swimming Club will send nine swimmers to take part in 38 events. As a Level 1 event, only swimmers who have achieved the qualifying standard can enter and the races are swum in the long course 50m pool. As Honiton’s swimmers swim almost exclusively in 25m pools, this will take some adjusting!
All 50m to 200m events follow the ‘Heats and Finals’ format, with all entrants swimming in the heats and the fastest eight in each age group qualifying for the final.
With County Titles and regional and National qualification on offer, competition will be tough for the Honiton swimmers, as the Devon’s top Clubs will be out in force with Plymouth Leander (112 Swimmers), Exeter City (84 Swimmers) and Mount Kelly (112 Swimmers) sending huge teams to compete, as well as many other clubs.
It will be a brilliant experience for the Honiton Swimmers and with several swimmers ranked in the top 10 for some events, there will be hopes of reaching some finals and bringing home some medals for the Club.
Representing the Club will be 10 year-olds Wilbur M (6 events), Alex H (2 events) and Julia L (8 Events). 11 year-olds George B (12 Events) and Keir O (2 Events), 14 year-old Hamish M (2 events), 15 year-old Isabel B-G (1 event), and Club Captains: Ellen B (2 events) and Duncan B (3 Events).
Good luck Honiton swimmers!
