An exciting week at Axe Cliff Golf Club culminated in a very successful Masher's Roll Up and presentation in the clubhouse, writes Dave Bruce.
The event was brilliantly organised by Masher himself, aka Paul Curtin. We have played the Weekday Roll Ups during the year, where a small sub is paid each game and collected by Paul to enable him to organise this annual event.
He keeps all the scores to allow him to give out numerous prizes and free food for all sections of the club and some invited guests at this Christmas Presentation Day. This year, he had 51 playing, meaning he had teams of three on 17 holes and our ground staff and volunteers have been tremendous in keeping the Course open and fully playable. Many thanks to Alex Taylor and his team.
The winning team of Leighton Morgan, Tony Davis and Andy Gabb scored a combined total of 106 stableford points. Paul gave special mention to 90 year-old Doug Sinden, who still pushes his trolley around and played more Roll Ups during the year than anyone!
We also had the wonderful feat of a hole-in-one from our Lady Member, Margaret Kenchington, on the par three 11th hole. Margaret, as per tradition allows, provided some free alcohol for all, if wanted, at the bar. It was good to see the clubhouse full with some 60 people enjoying themselves and keeping warm with a lovely log fire burning.
Paul still had the energy to play Friday in Round 3 of the Seniors Winter League competition and was only one shot of the lead with his 37 points. Young Ian Carvell had an amazing round, winning with 38 points.
The Men had their December Medal recently with Mike Cottam taking Division 1 with his nett 72 on countback from Brad Burraston and John Gait took Division 2 with his nett 69, leaving Paul Cordwell 2nd on 70, again on countback from Steve Anning.
I was very sad to hear that former popular Senior, Dave Weston, recently passed away. Our thoughts and prayers go to his lovely wife Anne.
