Honiton Town Reserves continued their impressive development with a powerful 4-0 win over Witheridge in the third round of the Devon Senior Cup.
The Hippos had to rely on goalkeeper Russ Bracey for a top save in the early exchanges before Ollie Courtier split open the Witheridge defence with a raking pass to Taylor Murphy, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper for an excellent finish.
Strong tackling from Alex Haggerty thwarted the next Witheridge attack and the second goal for Honiton was another lovely finish from Murphy, again rounding the custodian to slot home for a 2-0 lead at the break.
Victory was effectively sealed early in the second period, when Courtier supplied another delightful assist for Jack Murphy to convert.
The Hippos continued to create chances against a tiring Witheridge defence and gloss was added to the win when substitute Josh Newbery expertly lobbed the advancing ‘keeper and touched the ball into the net.
The team voted Man of the match and it was given to young gun Alex Haggerty, outstanding performance from start to finish. At just 16 years-old, Alex showed grit and determination to show the team he here to stay. His composure on the ball was very impressive.
The coaching team couldn’t be prouder of the lads. They have played 13 games together, the bond is strong and the football is getting better and better.
