It takes more than a storm called Ciaran to stop us playing golf at Axe Cliff, writes Dave Bruce.
Prior to the storm, we had our annual match of the Courtesy Cup between the Ladies and the Seniors. This year, the ladies were favourite with their five extra shots but somehow the Seniors just retained the Cup with a narrow two-point victory.
Surely, the round of the year was achieved by young Terry Atkins, with a nett 61 in a recent Medal competition witnessed and marked by Captain Steve. ‘Masher’ Paul Curtin won his last Roll Up with a fine 36 from Bill Darling, oops I mean Dearling.
I doubt if any local courses were open the day after Ciaran, but we were, and even buggies were allowed. A good number of Seniors enjoyed the day dancing to our Bowmaker Waltz team game.
The results were pretty amazing, with the greens holding up superbly after the storm. I calculate that, if the team all played to their handicap, their score would be 72 points but our winners managed a fantastic 79 points, being Tony Strong, John Purdy and Roger Hill.
Paul Curtin, Terry Atkins and Bill Dearling were a close second on 78. Paul is also to be congratulated on winning the final of our Summer Knockout Cup in a well-fought game with Ian Carvell.
The Men’s section finished the week on Bonfire Day in reasonable conditions. Good scores were seen again, with Mike Cottam taking Division 1 honours with his nett 67 from Richard Gibbons and Brad Burraston coming second and third respectively, on countback with their nett 69.
The Division 2 players were in sparkling form, with Nigel Pritchard and Mark Winterbottom coming 1st and 2nd respectively, again on countback, with an amazing nett 64 each. Dave Cottam took third place with his nett 66.
I finish on a sad note, as our thoughts and prayers go out to our wonderful Janet Dack who lost her lovely husband Max recently due to illness. Max always supported Janet in her golfing activities at the club and will be sorely missed.
