Axe Cliff Golf Club played the last of our Senior inter club matches for 2023 when we recently went to Bridport, the return game after holding them to a draw 3-3 at home earlier in the year, writes Dave Bruce.
It was very close but we came second, losing 4-2. My hat goes off to retired professional Andrew Thompson, who was my partner for the day and he was giving shots ranging from 7 to 21. We did lose on the 17th but Andrew had little help from me and never gave up despite one of their players, on the difficult par 3 10th hole, getting a par with a shot after hitting his drive into the large pond in front of the hole.
I can only describe one shot as a Barnes Wallis ball hitting the surface and gliding over the water on to the green to give them an easy par beating my 5 net 4. I thought I had seen it all in 48 years of golf but that was a first!
It’s been a great season, winning most of our home Senior matches and narrowly losing our away games, as usual.
A good number of Seniors braved the conditions in last Friday's Stableford with top players showing their class. Tony Strong won Div 1 with a fine 37 points and Leighton Morgan took the honours in Div 2 with his 34.
The Ladies competed for their annual Lorraine Cup for those members who were Medal winners in 2022 and this year proved very exciting, going down to the wire with our Vice Captain, Karin Cox, just winning with a nett 75, closely followed by Sandra Walker and Jill Wellington.
The final round of the Price Cup involved all participants playing each other in match-play over the year was completed and the competition was won by Ang Higgins.
The prestigious Presidents Prize in the Men’s Section was won on countback by Mike Chadwick from Jason Webber, both on 40 points. Alex Taylor was third.
With the curtain coming down on our Inter Cub matches for the year, the lovely photo by member Richard Chambers shows the sun coming down from our 10th Tee. Postcards of this available at Seaton Print & Design.
