It has been a busy and successful week for Axe Cliff Golf Club, writes Dave Bruce.
The Men’s Seniors started with a fine win in their inter club match away at Charminster near Dorchester by 3.5 to 2.5. We had already won our home match earlier in the year.
Charminster is a lovely course with a fine view of Dorchester and surrounding countryside, including Hardy's monument.
Then, on Thursday, four former Captains, namely Malcolm Glass, Chris Walker, John Hanna and Dave Bruce travelled to Stover Golf Club near Newton Abbot to compete in The Devon Veterans Golf Captains Autumn Meeting.
Dave Bruce was the overall champion of the day, taking home the prestigious Harold Lee Memorial Salver, which has been played for each year since 1989, apart from 2020 due to Covid. Dave beat some 50 competitors with a fine 42 stableford points.
These four then played in the annual Silver Salver trophy on Friday at Axe Cliff with many others but did not feature amongst the winners, who were the team of Chris Alexander, Mike Chadwick and Dave Morgan with 76 points.
The high score emanates from taking the best score over the first 6 holes, then the best two for the next 6 and all three scores counted on the last 6 holes. I calculate that the team finished 4 under par, which is a great result. In second place was the strong fancied team of Stuart Mackie, Alan Morgan and Nigel Pritchard on 70 points.
The Ladies also had regional success with Stella Thompson taking second spot in the South West Vets Autumn meeting, also held at Stover on Monday in a large field of 98 in very wet conditions.
Then, the whole section played at home for the Vets Bowl against a background of Storm Agnes but were able to finish and the clear winner was Sandra Walker with a nett 79.
Sandra then, on the following day, amazingly won the The Devon Lady Captains Autumn Meeting at Staddon Heights with her partner, Marie Timms of Sidmouth, with 32 points on countback.
