Lady Captain's Day at Honiton Golf Club took on the theme of 'Colours from around the World', writes David Carnall.
As you would expect, there were several ladies wearing red, white and blue but there were even more wearing the blue and yellow of Ukraine. Elizabeth Ward was a splendid sight in the colours of Papua New Guinea, including a flag, yellow grass skirt and face paint.
The competition format was a greensomes, with a few surprise additional rules on some of the holes. One hole had to be played off the yellow tees, another allowed a mulligan, and there was the usual 'nearest the pin' and 'longest drive', plus a 'shortest drive'!
Lady Captain Jayne presented the prizes, starting with her Lady Captain's Prize to Cathy Williams who had won the previous week's stableford with a score of 37 points on countback. In first place for the Greensomes were Cathy Williams and Ann Desmoulins, in second place were Rashmi Jeffery and Lesley Farley and in third place were Ann Trayling and Chris Luttman.
Nearest the pin was won by new member Kay Honey, the longest drive prize went to Janet Hughes and the shortest drive to Jane Watts. Lady Vice Captain Cathy Pawley thanked Lady Captain Jayne for her hard work in planning a very enjoyable day and presented her with a gift and flowers from her Working Group committee.
Tuesday Mixed format was a Texas Scramble with five teams of four taking part. Despite a player missing through injury, Liz and Ken Wood and Brian Hoepelman easily took first prize with a nett score of 52. There were two teams with a score of 59 but, on countback, it was Linda and John Northover and Sue and Paul Ritchie who took second place.
The pairs better ball Stableford event was won by Jim Wallis and Dave Maggs, narrowly beating the teenagers of Sam Ollie and Tom Lawler. Andy Morris and Paul Rutland were third.
In April, Honiton Golf Club launched 2023 England Golf get into Golf, and since then 28 new golfers have become part of the club. A similar event is planned towards the end of the summer, if anyone is interested in taking up the challenge, please contact the club on 01404 44422.
