The sunny month of June saw the fourth and final round of the Masters Trophy at Axe Cliff Golf Club, writes Dave Bruce.
This gruelling event is a massive test of stamina and consistency, but members were treated to a thrilling finish, leaving our overall winner as Nigel Pritchard, despite a couple of 7's on his card and being pushed by Leighton Morgan and Geoff Greenslade, who tied for second place with great finishes of 65 apiece.
I always think, for the seniors, that this is our toughest competition, as it is played over four rounds and in a Medal format, which, as any amateur golfer will testify, is a serious examination of patience and positivity.
The only difference from our professional players is that we play at Axe Cliff not Augusta and not on consecutive days either but probably over 3/4 weeks - well played Nigel.
We also competed for our Warren Cup Trophy alongside the Maters and this was won by Richard Bush with a tremendous nett 64.
Another close competition was our Seniors Charity Bowl with two players on 42 points but, on countback, the trophy goes to top chef Nigel Tarr, just beating Geoff Greenslade, leaving third spot to Tony Snell with 39 points.
On the last day of the month, we battled for another tough competition, which was our 3 Club Challenge, where you are only allowed 3 clubs to play with and one is your putter. Tony Strong showed us that you don’t need a full bag of clubs to choose from and won with a magnificent 34 points, only two points off playing to his handicap! Bill Polley and Leighton Morgan pushed him all the way in second and third respectively with 33's.
The Men’s June Stableford turned out to be another thriller with one point separating the first three finishers. Andy Trivett showed his class with a fine win on 37 but only on countback from Jason Farrant. Bill Dearling made the podium, taking third place with a 36.
Recent Masher's Roll Up winners were, firstly, Andy Jeffrey and most recently, Chris Walker with 39 and 41 points respectively. Andy showing he not only can keep the Course looking great but can also play a bit.
