On Sunday, May 14 at Honiton Golf Club, Alex Cave won the 36 hole Steele-Perkins Trophy played in the Bogey format, where play is against the Par of the course.
After round one, Alex found himself two shots off the lead held by Andy Phillips and Matt Young but with Andy not able to play in the 2nd round due to representing the club in the East Devon League, it was a shoot-out between Alex and Matt. Alex held his nerve to run out the winner with an aggregate score of plus 3.
What a difference a week makes! From torrential rain and thunderstorms to warm dry and sunny. The Tuesday Mixed played a Texas Scramble and the scores at the top were very close.
With a nett 57, it was Joan Crook, Linda Curtis, Mick Swann and Mike Delaney who came first. Second place, with a nett 58, was decided on countback, with Penny Blackburn, Barbara Cummings, Steve Bond and Paul Hill just edging it from the third group with a better back three.
The ladies played a Greensomes format on Wednesday, May 17. The 18-hole competition was won by Lady Captain Jayne Jackson and Liz Rogers with 39 points. They were well clear of second place Sheila Palmer and Maureen Lawrence who scored 33 points.
Third and fourth places were decided on countback, with both pairs scoring 32 points, but it was Sue Kelson and Vera Richardson who just pipped Steph Barnes and Liz Wood. The nine-hole competition was won by Elizabeth Ward and Hilda Hoepelman with an impressive 21 points.
The Emerton Court team did the club proud by defeating Thurlstone over two legs, Peter Clarke led with his usual zest, and Honiton GC can now look forward to the next round.
And finally, Friday, May 19 was the annual Captain v Vice Captain match, it was a thoroughly entertaining but competitive match, congratulations to the Vice Captain Neil Price on taking the victory, ten games to seven, all competitors received a mini bottle of wine after the match.
