On March 18 at Honiton Golf Club, the Saturday Circus held a Stableford event in memory of Gary Sellick.
Gary was an ever-present Saturday Circus player and always played with a yellow ball, so the event held in his memory meant everyone who played had to tee off with a yellow ball, if not, fines were administered by his son Ryan.
The winner of the 40-strong field event was Dave Chaffey with an excellent 41 points, followed in by Jason Lovering with 39 and back in tied third was Steve Charlton and John Tierney with 38. With the fines and other proceeds, over £400 was raised for hospice care, a great day was had by all and I think Dave is considering using a yellow ball all the time!
After a two-week break due to the wet weather and thanks to the hard work of the Honiton ground staff, the Seniors were back on the course for a 3BBB – two to score competition.
A combination of a wet course, lively winds and blustery showers provided challenging conditions for all the members. Despite the weather, the winners with an impressive 74 points were Nigel Broadbent, Jon Kane and Derek Keen.
Second were George Smith, Tony William and John Pawley with 69 points. The team of Dave Morgan, Andy Manley and John Robinson pipped Paul Webber, Eric Short and Chris Shepherd for third place on countback after both teams carded 67 points. Only 17 holes were played, with the short 2nd hole out of action due to tree maintenance.
Last Saturday, the East Devon League had their first comp of the year, a four-team stableford event at Wrangaton, but with a gusty wind and showers from all directions, it was going to be a difficult golfing day.
With all four team scores to count, the Honiton quartet returned with a creditable 144 points par for the day and top scorers were Matt and Steve Bond with 39 points. Honiton eventually finished third just behind Fingle Glen with 148 points and home team Wrangaton with 146.
