In dreary conditions, Honiton RFC entertained second-placed Torquay and pushed them all the way before going down 17-26.
Home pressure saw Jake Smith register the first points of the game from a penalty kick 3-0. Despite being pegged back by a penalty, the Ton quickly returned and scrum half Dom Bernhardt finished off some slick interplay by the back line to score the first try of the game, converted by Jake Smith
Some weak tackling saw Torquay get their first try of the game through their number 13 who went through the home defence to score to the right of the posts.
Torquay exerted some sustained pressure on the Honiton line and were rewarded with their second try of the game, conversion was missed 10-12 at half-time.
A strong start to the second half by the away side saw them get within inches of their third try of the game, the referee ruled he was short and had knocked the ball on. However, a fine pass and line break saw the visitors stretch their lead further when they scored under the posts.
Despite the atrocious weather, both sides were still managing to play some good rugby but unfortunately it was Torquay who got another converted try, 10-26.
Honiton got their second try of the game when Jake Smith powered his way over, he converted his own try for 17-26 towards the end of the second period. Honiton continued to press but they ran out of time and were unable to overtake Torquay at the end.
Rugby values were definitely at the heart of the Honiton Dimonds’ weekend performance. Facing a depleted Saracens team, the boys stepped up and made up the numbers for the opposition.
Some great breakdown work enabled the U12’s to secure and maintain possession allowing some strong running to dot down some well worked tries.
Much the same in the second half crossing the line another four times to secure a good win. Saracens did manage to get some points on the board, however the Honiton RFC boys certainly had a hand in helping their scoreline.
