Honiton Rugby travelled to league leaders Tavistock with a few key players missing and they were unable to upset the form book, despite battling hard and scoring some decent tries in a 67-25 defeat.
Tavvy raced into a 14-0 lead before the Ton got on the score-sheet with a Jake Smith penalty and they moved the score to 14-10 when Ben Phillips finished off a delightful move from the visitors.
The Ton were in the game until two late tries in the first half made the score a lot more positive in Tavistock’s favour, 24-10. It now looked like a huge challenge for Honiton and so it proved, as Tavvy turned on the style after the break.
The Ton did enjoy some cheer with Will Leonard and Smith both dotting down in the closing stages. Arguably Honiton’s best score of the day came when Ben Kidson pounced on a loose pass and ran the full length of the pitch to dive over the line.
Tavistock are a very good side and thoroughly deserve promotion but the Ton certainly did not disgrace themselves on the day.
After a couple of tough weeks, a trip to Kingsbridge saw the young players from Honiton Dimonds earn a well-deserved victory.
From the whistle, the Ton pressurized the opposition, making it difficult for them to attack by forcing mistakes and turning over the ball. Honiton soon put points on the board and continued to dominate the play, scoring another before half-time.
The second half was much of the same, however, with the opposition trying different options to clear their lines, it allowed the Dimonds to counter attack on numerous occasions, keeping the pressure on and delivering another two tries before the final whistle.
Kingsbridge did manage to score a couple after some decent phases saw them camp out on the Dimonds line but a little too late. The final score was 4-2 to Honiton, with tries for Marcus and Eric. Man of the match went to Eric for his attitude, effort and the impact he had on the game.
