Honiton Golf Club held its Annual Captain’s drive-in on Saturday and had a wonderful turnout of over 100 competitors in a better-ball format.
It was the last-minute pairing of Steve Charlton and Barry Colbourne, who came out on top with a very impressive 44 points, beating Stephanie Barnes and Ross March with 43 and back in third, Sam Phillips and Ryan Sellick with the best of the 42s.
Then it was the turn of the Captains from each section traditionally hitting the fairway off the 18th tees. Junior Captain Josh Lane stepped up to the plate and held his nerve, as did Ladies Captain Jayne Jackson.
Seniors Captain Rob Graham had a couple of attempts, which meant the pressure was mounting on Men’s Captain Paul Willey to hit it first time, but the best way to explain it was that he needed 3 or 4 practice shots before he eventually hit the perfect draw-shaped shot on to the 18th fairway. All players then met in the clubhouse for some light refreshments and prize giving.
In the evening, Paul and Jayne invited some 90 guests to an evening meal where the guest speaker was Sima Davarian from Bowel Cancer West, the chosen charity of this year’s Captains. With auction prizes and a raffle, the club raised over £3,000 at the event and a great night was had by all.
The Seniors’ Bowmaker was played on a cold frosty morning but 54 seniors gave it their all, playing on 18 temporary greens. The eventual winners were Bill Eaton, John Chew, and Stan Squire with a score of 72 points.
The Tuesday Mixed competition this week was a 14-hole 4BBB team event with the best man and best lady scores to count. It was played in glorious sunshine, though there were still a few temporary greens in play due to the early morning frost.
The winning score was a very impressive 76 points achieved by Maureen and Harry Lawrence, Cathy Uttley and John Ward. In second place with 71 points were Ann Trayling, Sheila Palmer, John Craig and Peter Clark.
