Axe Cliff Golf Club sadly had to say goodbye to another of our much-loved Seniors, Roger Wright, who passed away peacefully at home on January 7, aged 82.
I can recall Roger being the Seniors' Captain way back in 2002 after joining the club in 1997 and he carried on playing until 2019. He also designed the Club Logo and often played with two other stalwarts, Terry Jessop and Peter Jakes.
Roger had a long career with the Ministry of Defence and was very good at electronics, somehow keeping many a TV alive.
Mel, his lovely daughter, gave a wonderful eulogy at his funeral in East Devon Crematorium and told me that he played left handed mostly in his adult life, from Bahrain to Malta and Morocco, then at St Mellion and Bath.
Roger always had a smile, even when Terry beat him with a huge sense of fun for everyone and his many friends at the club. In his varied visits abroad, he met the great Jack Nicklaus.
It was very special that Di, his loving widow, held a gathering after the funeral in our clubhouse. He is sorely missed by all his family and many friends at Axe Cliff Golf Club.
