Axminster Town came through a dramatic game at Dartmouth to emerge with maximum points and remain within reach of the top five in the South-West Peninsula League.
In a blistering start to the game, Dartmouth won a penalty but were thwarted by a superb save from Shay Allen and the Axminster custodian remained inspired throughout, although it was far from one-way traffic, the Tigers creating plenty of chances of their own at the other end.
The second penalty of the game was awarded to Axminster on 43 minutes after a foul on Richard Hebditch. Dartmouth ‘keeper Connor Smith saved the initial effort from Craig Veal but Jamie Short pounced on the rebound to give the Tigers a half-time lead.
The spot-kick drama continued after the break, with Axminster reduced to ten men when Ethan Phillips was dismissed for a deliberate handball. Incredibly, Dartmouth missed the third spot-kick of the game and Axminster held on for the points.
Honiton Town remain in a steady mid-table finish after an excellent point at home to a dangerous Teignmouth outfit.
The Teigns have enjoyed some fine form recently but were on the back-foot when Kyle Howell rattled the crossbar for the Hippos. Moments later, Honiton were in front, Howell whipping over a delicious cross and Danny Baily got enough of a touch to loop the ball over the visiting goalkeeper.
The Hippos remained firm until the break, with Owen Hanks superb at the back. Teignmouth had a penalty claim waved away on 65 minutes. However, the next infringement in the box did not go undetected, and the Teigns earned a draw.
Honiton are on the road to Plymouth Marjon this weekend, while Axminster travel to Teignmouth.
Feniton were involved in a thrilling game in the Devon Football League, eventually going down 5-3 at home to Barnstaple Town Reserves. Lewis Masters scored a stunner for Fenny and there was a double for exciting youngster Jay Leballeur, but credit to Barum for a top display.
In the Devon & Exeter League, Millwey Rise can be pleased with their performance, despite going down 3-1 at Awliscombe. In a ferocious game, the home side streaked into a 3-0 lead but Chris Fry grabbed a consolation for Millwey, who performed admirably against a strong side.
