Honiton Town won their second game of the season as they edged Holsworthy 1-0 in the South West Peninsula League Premier East.
The fixture was the reverse of a fortnight again when the two sides battled it out at Mountbatten Park. Honiton Town were the winners that day so went into Saturday’s fixture full of confidence.
The team lined with Aaron Doble and Joe Dixon in central defence, Ben Ede and Harry Leisk at full backs. Lewis Couch, Jacob Rowe, Chris Long and Conor Flanagan occupied the midfield spots while father and son duo Pete and Billy Knox headed up the strike force.
Luke Ashford was once again between the posts and took the captain’s role while Eliot Dyer remains injured.
Town started brightly and were benefited by a downhill slope in the first half and also with the wind behind them. They forced a couple of chances in the first few minutes, however the Hippos could not break down the home team’s defence.
It wasn’t until the 37th minute when the deadlock was broken. After some good team play, Dixon played the ball out wide to Leisk, who in turn pulled the ball out to Couch. The Hippos player fired the ball home through a crowd of players and passed the keeper.
Town went in at half time one goal to the good but knew they had the to play up the slope and into the wind.
In the second period, Couch had several half chances but couldn’t find the target. The best chance of the half came from Pete Knox who struck a powerful effort against the post.
As the clock ran down, the home team searched for the equaliser but made very little goal scoring opportunities.
The Hippos ended their venture in North Devon with three points but could not spend to long celebrating as they were back in action on Monday night (September 21) away at Crediton United.
