Film lovers in Honiton will be able to continue to watch the flicks at the Beehive thanks to a community award.

Heather Penwarden, Dementia Friendly Honiton and Wendy Van der Plank from the Beehive, recently travelled to Hall and Woodhouse Brewery in Dorset to receive a community chest award for £800 in order to continue subsidising the monthly nostalgic cinema shows at the Beehive.

The Badger beer was sampled, of course, 'it would have been rude not to', says Wendy, and they expressed their thanks to the Hall and Woodhouse team for recognising the need for the valuable community event to continue. Heather and Wendy relayed the great news to the audience and volunteers at November’s screening of Funny Face, starring Audrey Hepburn.

Wendy said ‘’In total there were 28 award winners out of 450 great community organisations and projects so we’re thrilled and very fortunate to have been selected. It’s also brilliant that we can continue to provide this lovely, friendly monthly event which now has a loyal group of followers as well as others who pop in with family members when they have the time or when on holiday.

"Dementia Friendly Cinema is proven to be very therapeutic for people with memory problems and their families. Besides engaging the brain and stimulating emotions, being part of an audience enjoying a film helps people with dementia and their carers to feel less isolated and also challenges the stigma associated with the condition. It’s also lovely to meet others and chat after the film."

All Nostalgic Cinema performances have subtitles to assist full enjoyment of the film by any members of the audience who are hard of hearing.

"Whilst promoted as a dementia-friendly screening, we hope anyone who loves the old films will come along for an afternoon of fond memories," added Wendy. "Our next film, showing at 2pm on Thursday, December 23, is White Christmas Starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. Music composed by Irving Berlin. A gorgeous, festive film with some wonderful songs. Come along!"

Tickets £4.50 - includes tea and biscuits after the movie.

As well as the Nostalgic Cinema, The Beehive is keen to offer continued stand-out entertainment to the Honiton community. And one of the shows not to be missed this year is Snow Angel Cabaret which will take place at the Beehive this Friday (December 17) at 8pm.

From the ashes rises a Phoenix… or at the very least a couple of birds with tremendous style.

A shamelessly festive show celebrating all that is Christmassy. From Michael Bublé and Tiny Tim to Frozen mashups and the return of the small and ever-popular Eskimo.

Mad-capped, joyous and at times preposterous, this is an evening of festive frivolity with a tiny sparkle of magic that will delight the unhinged and charm the pants off everyone else.

"Charlie Bicknell and opera singer Louise Innes combine a gloriously dark sense of humour with amazing voices. A great fun night out not to be missed!" The Observer
