When Lex and Stuart Turnham embarked on the restoration of their historic Victorian villa in the heart of the Devon countryside, they knew exactly who to trust with their kitchen renovation.

They’d worked with Mike Richards in the past, so they went back to the experienced designer and manager at Nolte Kitchens Exeter for this new project for which they had a particular vision

‘Having previously worked with Mike on a kitchen renovation, we were confident he was the ideal choice for our latest project,’ says Lex, speaking to Devon Life Magazine. ‘Our vision was to infuse contemporary wow factor into our 19th century rectory, a space characterised by large, high-ceilinged rooms demanding bold design choices.’

This was perfectly complemented by a sleek black anti-fingerprint front from the Pure range for the tall units. The kitchen was equipped with high-end appliances for an elevated cooking experience, including a Bertazzoni range cooker, a bar area with a dual-zone wine conditioner, a plumbed-in coffee machine, and a freezer with an ice maker. And Nolte’s unique handle rail lights, with up to six controllable zones via a wireless remote, offered subtle mood lighting to suit any occasion. However, these extra special touches didn't come at the expense of functionality.

Lex and Stuart, having enjoyed the durability of Dekton worktops in their previous kitchen, opted for the black tones of Domoos which blended seamlessly with the natural shade variations of the slate doors. And the use of top cupboards above tall units, provided additional storage while avoiding dust traps.

The project was complex and needed both precision and dedication from Mike and fitter Tony Cole.

Despite these hurdles, his dedication to detail and consistent communication ensured that every aspect of the design aligned with our lifestyle and budget.’

Tony, the meticulous fitter, ensured the surroundings were well-protected and maintained a safe environment for the family throughout the installation.

Carol and Steve wanted a traditional kitchen with a contemporary twistCarol and Steve wanted a traditional kitchen with a contemporary twist Dual design - a second space for family living

A major selling point of the house was the opportunity for Stuart’s parents, Carol and Steve, to build a fully self-contained extension at the back of the property. During the renovation, they discovered an old well, which has now been tastefully restored and serves as a beautiful feature in the room.

Carol says: ‘Having previously used Mike's expertise on a project, we knew he was the best man to design a kitchen that would sit sympathetically within a quirky but spacious room. Our brief was to create a traditional kitchen with a contemporary twist. Mike delivered on all fronts.’

The 20mm Silestone worktops in Miami Vena elegantly connected the two colours, while a copper metallic glass splashback added depth and dimension, mirroring the hues in Carol’s collection of French pottery.

The Miele vented induction hob eliminated the need for a separate extractor, allowing an uninterrupted view of the garden. Additional features included a built-in TV unit, a traditional Belfast sink with a Pewter tap, and a hideaway door in a tall unit concealing a mixer and toaster. The pull-out shelf allowed for easy use without moving the appliances to the worktop.

‘Working with two couples who had a clear vision but were also open to my ideas made the design process so much easier,’ says Mike.

‘I love the mix of modern and traditional elements in both kitchens. Both are bespoke designs tailored to their lifestyles, and they look stunning.’

Despite the inevitable challenges, Mike and Tony's expertise ensured a smooth process and a beautiful result. The project is a testament to Nolte Kitchens Exeter’s commitment to quality, innovative design, and customer satisfaction.
