David Mamet’s ‘Duck Variations’ will be coming to Axminster Guildhall on Sunday, October 8.
The play, hailed as ‘an exquisite 60 minutes’, forms part of Benchmark Theatre’s 2023 South West Tour.
'Duck Variations' follows George and Emil, two older men who sit on a park bench overlooking a lake. Together, they discuss everything from ageing to politics to philosophy and, of course, ducks.
Written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet, the hour-long play is a delightfully combative character-led debate, and touches wittily upon the need for human connection and friendship, especially in older age.
The playful yet poignant comedy features Exeter actors Mark Cassidy (Boo to a Goose Theatre) and Mark Shorto (EXE Ensemble), and is directed by Alistair Ganley, Artistic Director at Cygnet Theatre, Exeter.
Benchmark Theatre brings Duck Variations to Axminster after successful runs at Theatre Fest North Devon and the Shaftesbury Fringe.
In a review from Barnstaple Fringe, Laurie Tarling says: “If you want to spend an exquisite 60 minutes in the company of two actors and a director who all really know their craft, then this is for you.
“It’s quirky for sure – you’ll leave knowing more about ducks than you ever expected. But the vulnerable, abrasive, endearing characters of George and Emil will stay with you long after you leave.”
Fans of classic theatre will enjoy the absurd humour and sharp exchanges in David Mamet’s early comedy, with its finely drawn characters based on two of Mamet’s own old uncles!
Tickets for Duck Variations at Axminster Guildhall are on sale now.
