Honiton Town Council have appointed a new mayor for the town - councillor Helen Hurford.
At a meeting on May 15, the council also appointed councillor Tony McCollum as the deputy mayor.
Both Helen and Tony will be busy throughout the year attending various events as lead representatives of the Town Council.
Helen Hurford ran as a candidate in the Tiverton and Honiton by-election last June, she came second with 16,393. A by-election was triggered after the resignation of Neil Parish.
Councillor Helen Hurford said, “I am delighted to be voted as Honiton Town Mayor. It is a great privilege to not only be the Town Mayor but the 9 th female Mayor in the town's history. Following in the footsteps of Councillor J Phillips OBE in 1920. I am fortunate to be the Chairman of 18 elected Councillors. Elected by the people of Honiton, who are motivated and determined to fulfil the ambitious plans and projects for the community. I intend to continue the example of Mayorship set by Councillor Sexton, to lead this council in a respectful and transparent manor, inclusive to all.”
Councillor McCollum said “As newly elected Deputy Mayor, I am very happy to be able to offer my full support and work alongside Cllr Hurford in her role as Chair of Honiton Town Council and also as our newly elected Mayor. I look forward to our joint achievements in the coming year.”
