It's not every day that a gospel choir visits Lyme Regis, let alone one from West Africa.
This Summer Alogte Oho, the number one artist from Ghana, is visiting the UK for a live session at the BBC Maida Vale studio - where everyone from David Bowie to the Beatles have performed. While here, he's performing with his choir at a special concert at Lyme Regis's Marine Theatre. It's a great opportunity to catch an international band perform in an intimate setting.
He is accompanied by female choir, the Sounds of Joy, comprised of Lizzy Amaliyenga, Patricia Adongo and Florence Adooni.
Born to a Frafra father and an Akim mother, Oho grew up in the rainforest of southern Ghana before moving up to the land of the Frafra in the savannah of northern Ghana as a young boy. Growing up in Namoo, his father’s village of origin, he was deeply impressed by the glorious moments he experienced during the services at the village’s church. All that singing and drumming ensured he was the first at church every Sunday, long before the service even started.
Fast forward to today, and the band’s single “Mam Yinne Wa”, which was released in 2016 and produced by Max Weissenfeldt (Poets of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers), and their debut album of the same name from 2019 brought Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy a worldwide audience and meanwhile also a lively concert schedule in Europe.
The BBC DJ and tastemaker Gilles Peterson stated after the band’s performance at his Worldwide Festival: “It was my absolute favorite moment in 16 years at the festival. They were everything that music is for me.”
The show is on Friday 28th July at 8:00P.M. Tickets are available from £15 at marinetheatre.com
