A petition has been launched for a lollipop warden to be installed outside Honiton Primary School after a pupil was nearly knocked over by a speeding car.
A concerned parent of the school has launched the petition for 500 signatures, to appeal for East Devon District Council to install a lollipop person outside Honiton Primary School to ensure pupil safety. A few weeks ago, the Herald reported that Liberal Democrat MP Richard Foord has met with Honiton Primary School headteacher Christopher Tribble, after an 'altercation' broke out between two parents at the school over parking, on the same day a speeding car almost ‘knocked over’ a three-year-old pupil as they were crossing the road. The pair met to discuss what more could be done to ensure the safety of pupils at the school.
The petition needs 500 signatures for it to be recognised by the local authorities. As from today (Monday October 31) the petition has 270 signatures. A spokesman for the petition said: “We feel the entrance to Honiton Primary School on Clapper Lane, Honiton is currently very dangerous.
“We believe a lollypop person / crossing guard outside the Clapper Lane entrance of Honiton Primary School would help the safe crossing of pedestrians and a reminder to car users to park and use the roads more appropriately and safely. A lollypop person would also help with traffic flow as they ensure safe crossing in groups rather than people crossing in different locations."
Christopher Tribble headteacher at Honiton Primary School said: “We had a local resident, a young girl of three, narrowly missed by a speeding car outside our school - this is the latest incident in a string of near misses and incidents of poor driver behaviour. "Since I arrived here at Honiton Primary School, I have strived to raise the awareness of road safety in the parental body, to work with them to ensure a safer journey to and from school for all our stakeholders: children, parents and carers, staff and local residents. Many parents and local residents answered my call, to write to local MP Richard Foord and he heard our pleas, visiting me shortly after, to survey the road and consider actions that could be pursued. We vowed to work on this together until a satisfactory and workable outcome was secured for all. Discussions with the local and county councils continue."
